The ruling Awami League (AL) has announced names of the nominees for the ensuing parliamentary elections to be held on December 30.
On Saturday, a total of 230 candidates have given nominated to contest in the election with the Nouka (Boat) symbol.
AL General Secretary Obaidul Quader distributed the nomination letters among the candidates from 10am at its Bangabandhu Avenue Headquarters in Dhaka.
“Today, we just handed over the nomination letters to the candidates. Their names will be officially announced on Monday,” Obaidul Quader told the reporters.
He said, “We will also announce the nominees of AL-led Grand Alliance on Monday.”
AL President and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will contest from both Gopalganj-3 and Rangpur-6 Constituencies while Obaidul Quader got ticket for Noakhali-5 Constituency.
However, the AL high command administered a bitter pill to four of its senior leaders denying them nomination for the upcoming general election.
The leaders are AL Joint-General Secretaries Jahangir Kabir Nanok (Dhaka-13) and Abdur Rahman (Faridpur-1), Organizing secretaries BM Muzzammel Haque (Shariatpur- 1) and AFM Bahauddin Nasim (Madaripur-3).
Informed sources said they were denied the party’s nomination due to internal feud, unpopularity and seat-sharing formula.
The party awarded tickets to Dhaka North unit of AL General Secretary Sadek Khan for Dhaka-13, Monjur Hossain for Fraidpur-1, Abdus Sobhan Golap for Madaripur-3 and Iqbal Hossain for Shariatpur-1 constituencies.
“We have picked up the party nominees properly evaluating all aspects of their candidature and positions in their respective constituencies. But ‘winnability’ was the main factor to get the party ticket,” AL Presidium Member M Faruk Khan told The New Nation yesterday.
He said, the party-high command has asked the nominees to go to their constituents and campaign hard to win the polls race.
When asked, M Faruk Khan said, the aspirants, who failed to get party’s nomination, have also been asked to work together with party’s candidates to ensure their victory. Referring to AL Chief Sheikh Hasina’s decision, he said, the rebels will face organisational expulsion for lifetime if they contest as independent candidates violating party order or go against the party nominees.
