Presidential polls: AL nominates Abdul Hamid for 2nd term

The ruling Awami League finally nominated incumbent President Abdul Hamid as party’s presidential candidate last night for the second term.
The AL Parliamentary Board took the decision at a meeting at Gono Bhaban with the party president Sheikh Hasina in the chair.
The ruling party’s General Secretary Obaidul Quader made the announcement after a meeting of the party’s Parliamentary Board on Wednesday.
If any other parties, which have representation in the parliament, do not contest the presidential election, Hamid will be elected unopposed.
Hamid, is term who took office on April 24, 2013, will expire on April 23 this year. The presidential election will be held on February 18.
The Election Commission announced the presidential balloting schedule on Jan 25, with Feb 18 as the voting day in Parliament.
The commission set Feb 5 as the day for nominations and Feb 10 as the last day to withdraw those.
MPs vote in the presidential election held in the House, where the CEC acts as election officer.
