A modern and spectacular central office of the ruling Awami League is likely to be inaugurated on its founding anniversary on June 23.
Party sources, however, said if inauguration of the entire building was not possible, a part of the office would be opened for use on the day.
AL’s new 10-storied building is being constructed with all modern
amenities. The new building will have conference hall, seminar room, digital library, VIP lounge, cafeteria, journalist lounge, car parking and dormitory.
Awami League president and general secretary will have large separate rooms and a balcony with them. The whole office will be the WiFi zone.
Initially, the Awami League made its debut on June 23, 1949 in Rose Gardens, KM Das Lane of Old Dhaka. Since the establishment of the office of the Awami League, the shifting occurred 8 to 9 times.
Since 1953, a temporary office was used in the 9 Cancun house lane. Then in 1956, the office of the party was established at 56 Simson Road of Old Dhaka.
On January 25, 1964, the party’s then General Secretary Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman took office at 91, Nawabpur Road. After a few days, temporarily office was established at Sadhargat Rupmahal cinema hall lanes.
At the end of 1981, Sheikh Hasina took the responsibility of the party. 23 Bangabandhu Avenue was addressed as the central office of the party. Since then, the Awami League’s central office is there.
AL General Secretary Obaidul Quader and Housing Minister Mosharaf Hossain revealed the information during a visit to the site of the new building.
During the visit, they inquired about the progress of construction work of the building.
When contacted, Awami League office secretary Abdus Sobhan Golap told the media that there is a possibility of inaugurating the new party office on June 23. “But, it’s not final,” he also said.
“It depends upon the schedule of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, also the party president, as well as completion of the building’s construction work,” he said.
Earlier, it was planned to inaugurate the building sometime in March or April, but it was deferred due to delay in its construction work.
The demolition of old building of Awami League central office began in July 2016.
