The ruling Awami League has again deferred its central council for the second time. Now, the new date for party’s national council meet has been fixed for October 22 and 23.
The Awami League Central Working Committee [ALCWC] took the decision in a meeting presided over by Prime Minister and party President Sheikh Hasina at Gano Bhaban on Saturday.
Party sources told The New Nation that the
decision to defer the council has been taken due to the upcoming Eid-ul Fitr and monsoon. The national council was scheduled to be held on July 10 and 11.
The ALCWC, at the same time, also has decided to extend the tenure of existing committee for the next six months. Party’s Joint General Secretary Mahabubul Alam Hanif confirmed the matter.
The tenure of party’s central committee was extended for six months earlier in December. The extended tenure of the committee was to end in June. So, it is for the second time the tenure of committee has been extended, the party sources said.
The last council of Awami League was held in December 29 in 2012. And it had re-elected Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina as President and Syed Ashraful Islam as General Secretary. The tenure of the committee expired on December 29.
On January 9 after the ALCWC meeting, the party’s General Secretary Syed Ashraful Islam announced that the 20th triennial council would be held on March 28. But it was deferred citing the holding of Union Parishad [UP] elections. The polls for over 4,250 union councils – the lowest tier of the local government – have been completed in six-phases from March 22 to Jun 4.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who is also President of Awami League, said the 20th council originally scheduled for March 28 had to be postponed because of the Union Parishad elections.
“Our party delegates or councillors are from grass-roots level. Elections are important to us. They cannot attend while the elections are underway,” she had said explaining the reason to defer the date.
Awami League, the oldest political party in the country born in 1949 and led the nation’s freedom struggle, usually choose its leaders through national council.
