A Dhaka Court has sent reserved seat MP and Mahila Awami League General Secretary Pinu Khan’s son Bakhtiar Alam Rony to jail at the end of his four-day police remand in a case over shooting two men dead in the city.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Muhammad Asaduzzaman Noor passed the order when Detective Branch (DB) Sub-Inspector Dipak Kumar Das, the Investigation Officer (IO) of the case, produced Rony in the court without any fresh remand plea on Saturday afternoon, said the court General Recording Officer Mahmudur Rahman.
The magistrate fixed 16 June for hearing on the bail petition, and asked the jail authorities for taking necessary measure for his treatment as perthe jail code, he said.
Earlier, Rony’s lawyer Kazi Nazibullah appealed separately to the court for his bail and treatment after DB police produced him in the court. Rony was put on police remand on Tuesday in a case filed against him on charge of shooting two men to dead in the capital’s New Eskaton in the small hours on 14 April.
Earlier May 31, Rony and the driver of the microbus Imran Fakir were arrested on charge of their alleged connection to the killings.
On May 24, IO Dipak Kumar Das submitted a report with the court in connection with the killing. In his report, he mentioned that they had found Rony’s direct involvement with the killing of two innocent people.
It also said that Rony was annoyed with traffic jam after drinking in a city hotel at night.
The IO also requested the court to send Roni to jail for proper investigation of the case.
According police report, the ruling party MP Pinu Khan’s son Rony was drunk when he randomly opened fire at the victims on a busy street.
Annoyed by the gridlock, Rony stepped out of his car and fired four to five bullets, hitting two people. The car then vanished, Investigation Officer Dipak said quoting Imran’s confessional statement.
The Toyota Prado model car from which Rony shot the two men to death is owned by her mother Pinu Khan.
Sources related with the investigation said, Rony during the interrogation in remand admitted that he shot two men to death with his licensed gun from the car.
Rony also confessed to DB that they went to a bar at Bangla Motor that night, and then they went to Sonargaon Hotel. On their way back home, he gave one Jahangir a lift to Moghbazar, and returned towards Bangla Motor. But his car stuck in a gridlock at Eskaton at about 1:45pm that enraged him. Rony opened fire indiscriminately sitting beside the driver, and managed to flee the scene with the car.
He returned to his Dhanmondi house leaving Kamal at Hatirpool and his companion at another place.
Rony also admitted under police custody that the car was brought by his mother without tax under the MP quota.
“The incident took place when he along with his three friends was returning after a get together on the night of April 13,” sources claimed.
DB officials said the Prado is an important evidence of the case, and an appeal has been submitted to the court seeking order to seize the car.
Investigation officials also said the car will be seized within a day or two.
Rony is neither a politician nor an established person, or even a businessman. He obtained arms license due to influence of his mother who is a parliament member.
Imran Fakir, also arrested in the case, gave a confessional statement to the court saying that Rony was drunk when the shooting took place.
On the night of April 14, the driver of a CNG-run auto-rickshaw of the Daily Janakantha and a rickshaw-puller were shot dead in a random firing from a black Land Cruiser Prado around 1:45am on the Dilu Road area of Moghbazar.
Rickshaw-puller Abdul Halim died on the spot. Auto-rickshaw driver Yakub Sikder died while undergoing treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH).
A case was filed with Ramna police station on April 15 by Halim’s mother, Monawara Begum, was later shifted to the Detective Branch.
