Awami League supporters are said to have vandalised two polling camps set up by a BNP-backed chairman candidate in Sirajganj’s Shahjadpur.
Police rushed to the spot as the two sides clashed at Dorgapara at 12pm, Shahjadpur Police OC Iqbal Shamim Kabir said.
Six are contesting for the chairman post in Shahjadpur, where polling is due on Mar 31 in the fifth phase of the Upazila Parishad elections.
“I have visited the camps and advised them to submit a written complaint,” said Assistant Returning Officer and Upazila Executive Officer Russel Sabrin. But no complaint had been filed
by chairman candidate Iqbal Hossain Hiru, he said. Hiru, however, told bdnews24.com that Juba and Chhatra League leaders had attacked his camps.
They were led by Helal Akhand, brother-in-law of local MP Hasibur Rahman Swapan, who is supporting Azad Rahman, the candidate backed by the ruling party, he said.
“They beat up 10 to 12 of my supporters. They smashed motorcycles and tore election posters.”
He claimed two of his injured workers were admitted to the Khwaja Yunus Ali Medical College Hospital in a critical condition. MP Hasibur dismissed the allegation saying, “There was a meeting of leaders and activists from five unions at my house in Rooppur.”
He said they had gone on a procession towards Dorgapara and got embroiled in a tussle with supporters of the BNP-backed candidate in front of the camps.
Five of their leaders and activists were injured by Hiru’s supporters, he claimed.
