UNB, Dhaka :
BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia on Saturday night said Awami League leaders have disrespected Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman by extorting money to observe the national mourning day marking his death anniversary.
“You have seen how the ruling party men extorted money across the country in the name of marking the August 15. They dishonoured their leader (Mujib) by indulging in extortion,” she said.
Khaleda, also a former Prime Minister, made the allegation while exchanging greetings with members of the Hindu community marking Janmashtami, the birthday of Lord Krishna, at her Gulshan office, arranged by Hindu, Buddhist and Christian Oikya Front.
Chaired by BNP executive committee member and Hindu, Buddhist and Christian Oikya Front convener Goutam Chakrawarty, the Hindu community members who came from different parts of the country greeted the BNP chief with bouquets on the occasion.
The Hindus will celebrate Janmashtami, a religious festival marking the birth of Lord Sri Krishna, across the country amid festivity and religious fervour on Sunday. The day is a public holiday.
Greeting the Hindu community on the occasion of Janmashtami, Khaleda said BNP does not believe in religious minority concept as it treats all as Bangladeshis.
“Awami League doesn’t understand anything except promoting its own people. No people, irrespective of their religions and colours opinions are safe in the hands of the ruling party. The people of all religions are being persecuted now,” she said.
Khaleda alleged that the government is enacting laws one after another to annihilate democracy and establish its absolute control over the judiciary.
“Democracy is now dead. The current regime by grabbing power illegally is formulating laws one after another. It’s framed the broadcast policy a few days back. It would be seen someday later that our speeches aren’t aired,” she said.
The BNP chief urged people from all strata to get united and raise their voice against the government’s move to kill democracy.
Mentioning that the country is passing through a critical time, Khaleda said the people of the country, no matter which religion they belong to, are not in peace as corruption has spread everywhere and grasped all sectors.
BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, standing committee members Tariqul Islam, and Gayeshwar Chandra Roy, among others, spoke on the occasion.
