The BNP on Friday alleged that the recent attacks on the Santals in Gobindaganj Upazila of Gaibandha were carried out by the ruling Awami League’s local leaders.
A nine-member BNP delegation led by party Chairperson’s advisory council member Zainul Abedin Faruk visited the area and talked with the evicted Santals.
Faruk said, “The attacks were carried out by the AL leaders from the front.”
“We demand judicial inquiry to identify the culprits for justice. If the BNP comes to power again, we will hold a proper investigation into the incident,” he said.
The team distributed 200 pieces of sarees and lungis among the affected Santals.
Rangpur BNP’s Organising Secretary Asadul Habib Dulu, central leader Shushil Barua, Amalendu Das and other local leaders of the
party were present on the occasion.
The incident took place on November 6 when law enforcers carried out a drive to evict Santals from their homes close to the Rangpur Sugar Mills’ land.
Three Santal men were shot dead while at least 20 people from both sides were injured in the clash.
