The son of a local Awami League leader has been accused of torturing a schoolboy at Sirajganj’s Ullahparha Upazila. Kamrul Islam Antor, 13, a seventh grader, was allegedly beaten up and assaulted with a sharp weapon on the head by Alamgir Hossain on Wednesday.
Hossain’s father Ahsan Ali Sarker is the chairman of Ullahparha municipal unit of the ruling party.
The incident took place only days after Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina expressed her concern over a surge in the murder of children in the country.
Antor’s father said some mud was accidentally splashed on Alamgir’s body while the 13-year-old was riding his bicycle on Wednesday evening.
“Alamgir mercilessly beat up my son and hit him on the head with a sharp weapon,” he added.
Locals rescued the boy and rushed him to Sirajganj General Hospital.
Dr Faisal Ahmed at the hospital said the boy had a wound on the left side of his head, which needed six stitches.
Ullahpara Mayor Nazrul Islam said Alamgir had a record of assaulting people, including his colleagues, over trifles.
