Miscreants gunned down an Awami League leader at Agargaon under Sher-e Bangla Nagar Police Station in the city on Saturday late night.
Police said, Jahangir Alam, 35, an aspirant for the post of President of AL Ward No. 41, received fatal injuries when unidentified gunmen shot him from point blank range near his residence in BNP Bazar area of West Agargaon at about 11:30pm.
Officer-in Charge of Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station Abdul Momin said that the miscreants attacked the AL leader, who is also president of Agargaon Taltola Momota Bahumukhi Samabaya Samity, when he was returning his house at Shapla Housing in the area.
He received three bullets in the chest and abdomen. Later, he succumbed to his injuries at the National Institute of Traumatology and Orthopedic Rehabilitation [NITOR], known as Pangu Hospital, due to excessive bleeding. Younger brother of the victim Abdul Gafur said that Jahangir was killed following a rivalry with a powerful group over extortion, maintaining supremacy in the area and taking control of cattle market on the eve of Eid-ul Azha.
Senior AL leaders, including MP Zahangir Kabir Nanak, went to see the victim after the incident.
With the murder of Jahangir, three leaders of ruling Awami League local units were killed in separate incidents in different parts of the country in last three days following rivalry with opponent group over maintaining supremacy.
In another incident, Abdul Mannan, 45, president of Jessore City Unit of AL Swechchhasebak League, was shot dead by miscreants on Saturday afternoon.
Police said, some unidentified miscreants entered the business office of Abdul Mannan at Bezpara in the town after Asar prayers and opened fire on him.
He received critical injuries in throat and other parts of the body and immediately taken to Jessore Medical College Hospital where the duty doctors declared him dead.
Local people, including party members, brought out a procession following day carrying the body of Mannan demanding exemplary punishment of killers.
When contacted, Assistant Superintendent of Police Reshma Sharmin said police had launched a drive to nab the killers. Another AL activist Ataur Rahman, 39, was killed and two others were injured in a bomb attack by miscreants at Sheikhtola Bazar under Shibganj upazila in Chapainawabganj on Friday night.
The victim came under attack of miscreants while he was chatting with some locals at a tea stall in the bazaar around 9:00pm. The miscreants hurled 7-8 crude bombs at Ataur, leaving him dead on the spot.
According to sources, the reason behind the killing might be sequel of a long-standing rivalry with a section of local ruling party men over possession of tender and contract businesses in the area.
