A union leader of ruling Awami League (AL) was slaughtered by assailants at Maskurpur village in Kawnia upazila of Rangpur district on Tuesday night.
The deceased was identified as Rahmat Ali, 50, a leader of Tepa Madhu union unit AL.
Rangpur Circle Assistant Police Superintendent (ASP) Saifur Rahman said that Rahmat Ali came under attack at about 11:30pm while going to his home in Maskurpur from upazila headquarters medicine shop.
The attackers slit Rahmat’s throat, leaving him dead on the spot, he said. Police are trying to arrest the killers,’ the ASP said. A case was filed with the Kawnia Police Station.
The body was handed over to the family members of the victim after autopsy at Rangpur Medical College and Hospital morgue.
