A local Awami League (AL) leader was shot dead by unidentified miscreants in Sarishabari upazila of the district on Friday evening.
The deceased was identified as Hanif Uddin, President of Ward No.-2 unit, Doail Union AL of the upazila.
Confirming the matter, officer-in-charge (OC) of Sarishabari Police Station Billal Hossain told The New Nation that miscreants shot dead the AL leader at the union’s Charhatbari at about 7:45pm.
A gang of three miscreants in a motorbike swooped on Hanif when he was taking tea at a tea stall at Charhatbari Bazaar at evening.
The attackers from the close range opened fire on the AL leader, leaving him dead on the spot. Another person named Mozaffar Hossain received bullet injury in his leg during the fire. He was sent to a local clinic for treatment.
The OC said that police recovered the body and sent it to Jamalpur General Hospital for autopsy. None was, however, instantly arrested in connection with the murder.
Meanwhile, the local AL leaders and activists brought out a protest procession in the area. They demanded immediate arrest of the killers. Tension prevails. Additional forces have been posted.
