An Awami League leader has been shot at by miscreants in Lakshmipur Sadar Upazila. After the incident angry protestors stopped vehicular movement on Dhaka-Lakhsmipur highway at the Upazila’s Chandraganj Bazar on Saturday morning.
Victim Omar Faruk, 35, is the Awami League vice-president of Chandraganj Union. He was taken to the Lakhsmipur Sadar Upazila for treatment.
Chandraganj Police OC Humayun Kabir said the incident took place at the Union’s West Latifpur area on Saturday morning.
Faruk has sustained several bullet wounds.”Agitators have blocked Dhaka-Lakhsmipur highway at Chandraganj Bazar area from 10am. Police are trying to bring the situation under control.”
Meanwhile, Chandraganj Union Awami League President Md Nizam Uddin alleged local Chhatradal leader ‘Jishan’ and his supporters were behind the attack.
“Jishan shot Faruk in an attempt to kill him over political vendetta,” he said.
Faruk’s uncle Ismail Hossain said his nephew went to a tea-stall near his home in the morning where Jishan and his followers shot him. Locals rescued him in critical state and rushed him to the hospital. OC Kabir said Police were on job to arrest Jishan, who is a listed criminal.
