Syed Sultan Mira, a member of Bakerganj Upazila Awami League and younger brother of former AL lawmaker (Bakerganj-6) late Syed Masud Reza, received gun shot injures by his rival upazila BNP leader Salam Shikdar and his associates about 7:00 PM Monday at Maheshpur Bazaar under Neamoti union of Bakerganj upazila.
Bimal Chandra Saha, Secretary and Bazlu Mia, organizing secretary of Maheshpur union AL, also injured by beating of the attackers.
Azizur Rahman, officer in charge of Bakerganj police station, acknowledging the fact said gunshot injured Sultan Mira sent to Barisal Sher E Bangla Medical College Hospital and police rushed to the spot.
Some days earlier Sultan Mira and Salam Shikdar also engaged in scuffle over old rivalries and Salam Shikdar was accused in some criminal cases, the OC of Bakerganj PS added.
Some days ago a BNP rally was scattered by some people and BNP blamed AL for that. Perhaps the attack was instigated from that, said Atikur Rahamn, upazila BCL member.
Local people said AL leader Sultan Mira and BNP leader Salam Shikdar had old rivalries over different issues including spreading control over the area.
On Monday evening while Sultan Mira was talking with Bimal Master and other AL activists at a tea stall, a group of BNP activists led by Salam Shikdar attacked them.
In that attack Sultan Mira received gunshot injuries on his lower abdomen and rescued by locals sent to Barisal SBMCH immediately.
