Aug 21 carnage: AL leader Hasan Mahmud testified

Former State Minister for Forest and Environment and Awami League’s Publicity Secretary Dr Hasan Mahmud yesterday (Monday) testified in the case filed in connection with the August 21 grenade attack.
Judge Shahed Nuruddin of Dhaka’s Speedy Trial Tribunal-1 recorded the deposition of Hasan Mahmud when he told the court that the main target of the attack was to kill the then leader of the Opposition and at present Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and to make Awami League leaderless.
Besides, the court recorded the depositions of Abdul Matin, who was the driver of Sheikh Hasina during the incident. Later, the court decided to record the depositions of other witnesses on Tuesday.
With the deposition of last witness on Monday, the court completed recording the depositions of 130 witnesses. Earlier, the court summoned Nazmul Hasan Papon, son of former President Zillur Rahman, and some other prosecution witnesses to testify to the court.
The attack was carried out on an Awami League rally in city’s Bangabandhu Avenue on August 21, 2004, killing 24 people including Ivy Rahman, wife of late Zillur Rahman, and injuring scores of people.
