Woman raped for voting 'Sheaf of Paddy': AL leader among 2 more held Doctors confirm rape of Noakhali woman

A team of Detective Branch (DB) of Police in separate drives on Thursday arrested a local Awami League (AL) leader, who engineered ‘planned’ the ‘gang-rape’ of a woman, and another accused of a case in connection with the violation of the victim apart from the revenge of voting ‘Sheaf of Paddy’ in Subarnachar of Noakhali district on Sunday.
The arrested men are Ruhul Amin, the Publication Secretary of Subarnachar Upazila AL unit and former Chairman of Charjubli Union Parishad and accused Bechu Mia.
With this, a total of five people have been arrested in connection with the incident.
Md Ilias Sharif, Superintendent of Police (SP) of the district, said detective police arrested Ruhul Amin from a poultry farm in Sadar upazila in the early hours of Thursday . The team later conducted another drive at a brick kiln factory in Shenbagh upazila and arrested Bechu Mia.
On Tuesday, police arrested Badsha Alam from Charbajuli while prime accused Sohel from Cumilla district and Md Swapan from Ramgati upazila on Wednesday.
According to the victim’s husband, a group of hoodlums stormed into their house in the early hours of Monday and tied up all the family members except his wife.
They took the woman outside the house at gunpoint where they violated her in turns, claimed the victim’s husband.
After the rape, they also threatened the victim not to disclose the matter to anyone, saying they would kill her if otherwise, he said.
With the help of neighbours, the victim was taken to hospital on Monday noon and a case was filed against nine people over the incident.
Charjabbar Police Station OC Md Nizam Uddin said that the victim’s husband Siraj Uddin on Monday filed the case accusing persons in connection with the incident.
Meanwhile, doctors have found evidence of rape in the woman who was gang-raped in connection with voting dispute on December 30.
Dr Md Khalil Ullah, the Supervisor of Noakhali General Hospital, on Thursday said, “The test report was handed over to police,” he said.
