At least 10 leaders and activists of Awami League and its front organizations were hurt in a collision between two groups of the ruling party following formation of and union unit committee. Of the wounded, three received bullet wounds.
The clash erupted at Betalpara Bazar under Bagharpara upazila as upazila levels leaders including lawmaker for Jessore-4 Ranjit Roy rushed to the place for holding conference of Jahurpur union Awami League without completing ward level conferences on Wednesday evening. Locals and insiders of the ruling party told that leaders and activists of Awami League under four wards attacked upazila level leaders of the party including Ranjit Roy, law maker for Jessore -4 as they tried to hold the conference of Jahurpur union unit Awami League to form a new committed without completing the committees of ward number 3, 4, 7 and 8 of the union. The two groups were engaged in collision at one stage. Both the groups exchanged bombs, local weapons and stones in the collision. The lawmaker who is also the president of Bagharpara upazila unit Awami League was confined at the conference venue for about an hour. The police rescued him later firing 20 rounds of gun shots.
Quayum Ali Sarder, officer in-charge, Bagharpara police station told that the police were compelled to open fire as the law maker was attacked by some unruly people during the conference of Jahurpur union unit Awami League on Wednesday afternoon.
