UNB, Dhaka :
BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Sunday alleged that the Awami League government has got unnerved following the fall of Congress government in the Indian national election and the overwhelming victory of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
“Many ministers are now saying the people of Bangladesh and BNP are upbeat over the Indian Lok Sabha election results. Where have you seen our excitement? We’re not saying anything about it (Indian election). You (ministers) are making various remarks getting unnerved over the Indian election results,” he said.
The BNP spokesperson was addressing a discussion arranged by ‘National Committee for Resisting Indian Aggression’ at the National Press Club, marking the historic Farrakka Day.
Mentioning that they want to maintain a good relation with India, Fakhrul said they expect a friendly attitude from the new Indian government towards Bangladesh.
“We hope the new Indian government will come forward to resolve the outstanding problems with Bangladesh fulfilling the hopes and aspirations of Bangladeshi people,” the BNP leader told the discussion.
He alleged that the current Awami League government has failed to resolve problems with India, including water dispute due to its knee-jerk policy.
“They (govt) even couldn’t raise their voice against border killings as they were dependent on the Congress government just to cling to power.
The BNP leader regretted that though the lives and livelihood of Bangladeshi people have been at stake due to the building of dams over 54 common rivers by India, the government is silent over it,” the BNP leader said.
Accusing the government of indulging in killings, forced disappearances and abductions across the country, he said the Awami League government used RAB over the last three years to annihilate the opposition in a planned way.
“People are now vocal against Narayanganj killings but such incidents have not only taken place in Narayanganj. The government the same way killed many opposition leaders and activists across the country using RAB,” he added.
