The ruling Awami League feels triumphant following the visit of Chinese President Xi Jinping, the first by any Chinese head of state in 30 years after President Li Xiannian’s trip in 1986, when geopolitically Bangladesh is getting importance in the world politics.
Several AL leaders have expressed their opinions that Bangladesh has created a positive image as its international acceptance increased in the recent days. For that reason, many countries are interested to develop relations with Bangladesh, they said.
“The visit of Chinese President Xi Jinping will make a bridge of friendship between the two countries… The relation between Bangladesh and China is bilateral, not multilateral,” AL General Secretary and Public Administration Minister Syed Ashraful Islam told newsmen after welcoming the Chinese leader at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport on Friday.
Expressing optimism over the Chinese President’s visit, AL Presidium Member Nuh-ul-Alam Lenin said: “So far as I think, it is not possible to turn Bangladesh into a middle-income or developed country
without Chinese cooperation. There is no alternative but taking cooperation from China to increase economic growth [of Bangladesh].”
“This visit [of Chinese President] will encourage the Bangladesh government to take other mega projects, apart from ongoing infrastructural development projects, including Metro Rail,” Joint General Secretary of AL Mahbubul Alam Hanif said.
Insiders said AL is also feeling comforted now due to Chinese leader’s visit when the country has been considering Bangladesh as “strategic partner” in regional politics as well in development.
In fact, the AL became cornered in the global arena after January 5, 2014 one-sided voter-less national election. There was only one big friend India who stood beside the ruling government.
Still, the ruling AL government is facing challenges in the international arena centering the “election” as Bangladesh Nationalist Party [BNP] did not step aside from its policy to keep pressure on the government maintaining relation with its international contacts.
In this context, the ruling party is considering Xi Jinping’s visit as a “favourable” situation for the government.
The AL-led 14-party alliance leaders have said Bangladesh would go one-step forward towards middle-income country status, if it is possible to create a field for large-scale Chinese investment.
“The visit of Chinese President will not only create infrastructural development, it will also boost up socio-cultural progress of Bangladesh… I urge the authorities concerned to expand export market of Bangladeshi goods utilizing the scope,” President of Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal and Information Minister Hasanul Haq Inu said.
Echoing the same, General Secretary of Bangaladesher Samyabadi Dal, a partner of 14-party alliance, Dilip Barua said: “Signing deals with China for investment is not enough. Rather, the government should oversee whether the investment contracts are executed perfectly.”
Hoping that the Chinese President’s visit will accelerate friendship of both countries, AL Presidium Member and Agricultural Minister Motia Chowdhury said: “It will create a positive impact on AL’s own politics.”
