The ruling Awami League has been facing trouble in the upcoming polls to the three city corporations, as a large number of rebel candidates are contesting defying party directives.
Party sources said that the rebel councillor candidates did not withdraw their nominations despite several notices.
The party had asked the rebel candidates to submit their signed withdrawal letters to the party. A few candidates have submitted the withdrawal letters, but majority of the rebel candidates did not follow the party’s directive till the date.
Interestingly, some councillor candidates have filed allegation at the returning office of Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) that they were forced by the party to submit signed letters for withdrawing nominations, according to a reliable source.
In this backdrop, Mihir Sarwar Morshed, Returning Officer of the DSCC polls, had advised the candidates to take legal help.
Some rival candidates also alleged that several BNP men, those were regretted from their own party, have been participating in the polls under
banner of Awami League. Even several terrorists and extortionists have got the party blessing in exchange of money.
So, they have become rival candidates as a mark of protest against such decision of the party.
Mohammad Asaduzzaman Asad, a rival candidate in No 21 Ward in the DSCC, stood against the party-backed candidate M.A. Hamid. Asad claimed that the central and Dhaka University unit committees of the Chhatra League are favouring him.
He said that M.A. Hamid has joined the Awami League from the BNP. So he deserves the rights of getting the blessing of the ruling party as a dedicated worker of party.
Some Chhatra League leaders said that the real identity of M.A. Hamid has been reflected in his some pictures with BNP Chairperson’s adviser Mosaddesk Ali Falu which were posted on facebook and some other social media.
Asaduzzaman Asad, however, said that he won’t remove from the polls race. He will gift the post of No 21 councillor to Sheikh Hasina after wining.
Awami League leader Faisal Ahmed Nasir is taking part in the electioneering as councillor candidate at Ward No 42. But, the AL extended its support to Yar Mohammad Yaru in the ward.
Faisal Ahmed Nasir said that Yaru is a terrorist and corrupt person. Yaru is also not a dedicated person of the Awami League. So, he is taking part in the election with the support of the local leaders and workers, he added.
Two AL leaders– Mohammad Selim and Eliasur Rahman are contesting in Ward No 14. The party has opened the seat for both of the candidates. Two AL leaders are contesting in the Ward No 11, while five are contesting in the Ward No 22. Same situation are in some other wards in the DSCC.
AL coordinator in DSCC polls Dr Abdur Razzak said that the party has finalised the list of councillor candidates in all the wards. Who will contest the polls out of the list, he will be considered as rebel candidate, he added.
