Five people, including Jhinaigati Upazila Awami League (AL) Convener Warez Nayeem, were injured in an attack on the local Awami League office by position-deprived party men in Jhinaigati Upazila on Friday night.
Police, quoting locals, said the central committee of AL had announced holding of the party’s upazila council on December 4.
After receiving the information, former Jhinaigati upazila unit Jubo League President Azad and another leader Taher, who were deprived of positions in the recently declared committee of the party, along with their followers attacked Warez Nayeem and his supporters at AL office in the area at about 8:30 pm, leaving five people, including Warez Nayeem critically injured.
The attackers also ransacked valuables at the AL office.
They declared Warez Nayeem ‘unwanted’ in Jhinaigati.
Of the injured, three people, including Warez Nayeem, were admitted to Sherpur Sadar Hospital.
Supporters of Warez Nayeem vandalised six auto-rickshaws at Julgaon village at about 10:00 pm and blocked the Sherpur-Jhinaigati Road protesting the attack. On information, police rushed to the scene and brought the situation under control.
Additional policemen have been deployed in the area to fend off further trouble.
Officer-in-charge of Jhinaigati Police Station Fasihur Rahman confirmed the incident.
