Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) on Saturday accused the ruling AL of celebrating its victory in the December 30 election in order to divert people’s attention from “vote rigging”.
“They (AL) are celebrating the victory to hide the moral defeat they suffered in the election and to divert people’s attention in the different direction from it,” said BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir. He stated that democracy had been defeated in 11th Parliamentary Election, which virtually bears the sign of the biggest political defeat of Awami League.
.Fakhrul said, “There is no internal tension between the BNP, on the one hand, and its alliance members, especially Jatiya Oikyafront, on the other hand Oikyafront and the 20-party are united. We believe that the government now in power must be defeated by people.” In addition, there is no misunderstanding among senior leaders of BNP, Fakhrul claimed adding: “BNP is as united as it was in the past.”
The BNP further said, Awami League is celebrating such a victory which they earned by vote robbery. “Awami League suffered a moral defeat on December 30 as they are now isolated from people,” he said. Fakhrul passed these remarks while talking to reporters after placing a wreath at their party founder Ziaur Rahman’s grave in the city, marking his 83rd birth anniversary.
Fakhrul alleged that Awami League had little respect for democracy though they often speak about democracy.
Awami League established one-party rule, otherwise known as “Baksal” in 1975 banning all the political parties and snatching people’s freedom of expression.
Fakhrul said their party founder Ziaur Rahman restored multi-party democracy and people’s freedom of expression.
“On the birthday of the BNP’s founding President, we’re vowing afresh to free democracy and our Chairperson Khaleda Zia from prison and bring back our Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman home” he said.
