The ruling Awami League and the main opposition BNP have been chalking out their campaign strategies to dominate the ongoing Union Parishad (UP) polls now being held in six phases across the country.
The leaders in both the parties want to cash in on national issues in the electioneering to the grassroots level to ensure their victory in the battle of ballots.
The ruling party believes absolute win will give them political mileage, as the elections are likely to generate much heat in rural politics with the BNP taking part in the polls.
Leaders of Awami League have taken a new plan for campaign against BNP by showing photos and video footages of arson attacks on public vehicles and establishments during blockade programme last year. It is also trying to minimize rivalry and unrest inside the party.
On the other hand, the BNP has also taken new campaign strategies to gear-up its pressure on the Election Commission (EC) and the government by threatening to withdraw their candidates on charge of irregularities in the last two phases of UP polls. It blames the EC for its failure to hold free and fair polls. It also demanded reelections to all those UPs where
polls were held in the last two phases.
BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakrul Islam Alamgir, however, has said that his party will not withdraw candidates from the ongoing UP polls for the sake of democracy.
On the other hand, the party decided to show the irregularities and violence let loose by the ruling party men in the last two phases of the UP polls to achieve sympathy of the voters.
Jatiya Party, the main opposition in the Parliament, also expressed its distrust on the EC’s activities at a press conference in the city on Monday.
The two phases of UP polls claimed 38 lives and injured hundred others. It has harmed the image of ruling party. On the other hand, the BNP has failed to grew-up effective protest and achieve their desire results out of it.
To overcome the situation, top leaders of both the AL and BNP are trying to search for new campaign strategies.
The media have shown huge irregularities, vote riggings and violence in the two phases of polls in the different parts of the country.
Meanwhile, the UP polls have attracted huge criticisms from different quarters, both individuals and organisations. Sushashoner Jonno Nagorik (SUJAN) Secretary Badiul Alam Majumdar has termed the poll as ‘perverted.’ Most of the intellectuals also criticized the weaker role of the Election Commission.
In this situation, the ruling AL is trying to make up the coming polls acceptable to all. To make the vote acceptable the government asked the EC to act strongly to reduce the irregularities.
The ruling party leaders said, the government also assured the EC that all necessary logistic and other supports will be provided (to EC) to hold acceptable polls on the next phases of UPs.
Awami League Joint General Secretary Dr. Dipu Moni told The New Nation, “The government has asked the EC to take every measures to make all the upcoming UP polls free, fair, participatory and acceptable to all quarters.”
She also said, if her party men get involve to any type of vote riggings or irregularities they must be punished.
In these circumstances, BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia called a series of meetings for two days with her party and 20-party coalition leaders.
On Sunday night, Khaleda Zia met with her party senior leaders at BNP chairperson’s Gulshan office. Meeting sources said maximum of the leaders gave their opinions to stay on election field for the last moment. They have shown the logic that if they withdrew their candidates from the polls then the ruling party will easily win the race. Then the BNP even get no ways to protests.
In the other hand, if the party stays in the race then some candidates may win the polls, one of the senior leaders attend the meeting told this reporter on condition of anonymity.
“If we participate in the polls, we may get a strong right to protest every irregularity. Our local leaders and activists will also become the witness of the incidents and we may depict that before the people,” he added.
The other leaders said, the party may stay in the polls. But they may gear-up their pressure on the EC and the government to take effective measures to hold the next phases of polls as an acceptable means.
