Staff Reporter :A Jubo League activist was killed and 20 people were injured in a clash between the activists of Awami League and BNP in Araihazar upazila of Narayanganj district on Sunday morning.The deceased was identified as Amzad Hossain Mollah, 38, a local Jubo League activist. Sources said, the AL and BNP activists had been at loggerheads in the area since some Awami League activists tore up a poster of Jubo Dal central committee international affairs secretary Nazrul Islam Azad few days back.Following the incident, the BNP activists also tore off a festoon of local AL leader Nazrul Islam Babu, also an MP.As a sequel, the two rival groups, equipped with firearms and sharp weapons, engaged in a series of clashes at Duptar Bazar at about 11:00am on Sunday, in a wave of chase and counter-chase at regular intervals, leaving 11 people injured, including Amzad. At one point, Jubo League activist Amjad Hossain Mollah was severely stabbed by the opponents, locals said.Critically injured Amzad was rushed to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) where he succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment.Mozammel Haque, Sub-Inspector and In-charge of DMCH camp said that Amzad Mollah received a bullet in his chest. The victim’s body also bore several injury marks.Al least 20 people belonging to both AL and BNP were severely injured, including with bullet, in the clashes. The injured were admitted to DMCH and different other local hospitals, said Khandaker Mohiuddin, Superintendent of Police (SP) of Narayanganj.Later, police went to the spot and brought the situation under control. Meanwhile, additional police personnel have been deployed in the area, said officer-in-charge of Araihazar Police Station Alamgir Hossain.Vehicular traffic on the Dhaka-Sylhet highway was cut off for an hour due to the clash between 11:00am and 12:00 Noon.
