Sylhet Bureau :
Two main arch rival mayoral candidates – ruling Awami League’s Badar Uddin Ahmad Kamran and Bangladesh Nationalist Party’s Ariful Haque Chowdhury – in Sylhet city election blamed each other for breaching the electoral codes on Friday.
They made the allegation while they were conducting campaigns in the city to motivate the voters for casting votes in favour in the forthcoming mayoral polls scheduled for July 30.
Ariful conducted his electioneering on Friday at Kadamtali and Pathanpara areas of Dakkhin Surma in the city.
Coming out of the Kadamtali Central Jamey Mosque after offering the Jumma prayers, Ariful, also the immediate-past mayor and BNP central executive member, told the local residents that his main rival aspirant Kamran was violating the electoral code by bringing out processions during his campaign in the city.
‘Kamran’s supporters even torn out my posters in Court Point area of the city,’ Ariful alleged, saying Kamran and his supporters were not maintaining the timeframe set by the election commission to run electioneering.
Responding to Ariful’s complaints, the city AL president Kamran has brought a number of counter allegation against Ariful.
He claimed that Ariful and his supporters have been breaking the rules through bringing out motorcycle processions and holding rallies at different parts of the city since very beginning of the electioneering.
‘So, bringing the allegation of violating the election code against me does not match with the voice of Ariful,’ Kamran added, saying that he is always respectful to the law.
Kamran also alleged that Ariful has been running electioneering accompanied by spotted terrorists, who were wanted in different cases filed for committing criminal offences and destructing activities in the past.
Kamran said this while he was running his election campaigns at Sobhanighat, Zatarpur and Mendibag areas in the city from 9:30am to 12:30pm on Friday.
