AL-backed Blue Panel sweeps DUTA polls

Staff Reporter :The Awami League backed the ‘Blue Panel’ swept the Dhaka University Teachers Association (DUTA) election 2015 held on Wednesday winning all the 15 posts.The lone rival BNP-Jamaat supported ‘White Panel’ suffered humiliating defeat. The election began at 10:00am yesterday and continued till 2:00pm without break at the Dhaka University Club.Election Commissioner Professor Shafiquzzaman announced the result at 4:15pm yesterday. One thousand three hundred sixty-five voters out of 1,902 exercised their franchise. Dhaka University Social Science Faculty Dean Professor Farid Uddin Ahmed was re-elected DUTA President while Environmental Science Faculty Dean Professor ASM Maksud Kamal became General Secretary. Professor Akhter Hossain Khan of Soil, Water and Environment Department and Provost of Sir P J Hartog Hall Professor Lutfar Rahman contested as president and general secretary respectively. Management and Information Department teacher Professor Hasibur Rashid was elected Vice-President, while Business Studies Faculty Dean Professor Shibly Rubayyatul Islam as Treasurer and Senate Member Professor Aftab Ali Sheikh bagged the position of Joint Secretary.The other elected office bearers are: Arts Faculty Dean Professor Akhtaruzzaman, Criminology Department Chairman Professor Ziaur Rahman, Television and Film Studies Department Chairman Professor A J M Shafiul Alam Bhuiyan, Professor Nizamul Haque Bhuiyan of Food and Nutrition Institute, Professor Sabita Rezwana Rahman of Microbiology Department, Professor Rahmat Ullah of Law Department, Associate Professor Tazin Aziz Chowdhury of English Department, Mubina Khandaker of Marketing Department, Professor Sowmitro Shekhor of Bengali Department and Professor Abdus Samad of Applied Mathematics Department were elected executive members. Professor Shafiquzzaman said that the election was free and fair. There was lodged no complaint of rigging. Re-elected President of DUTA Professor Farid Uddin Ahmed told The New Nation that they pledged to the teachers in the last election manifesto to improve the overall academic atmosphere and do infrastructure development. I think we did this. That is why the teachers cast their votes for us,” Professor Farid said.Professor Akhter Hossain Khan said that they received the result of the elction and congratulated the newly elected leaders of DUTA.
