Awami League-backed candidate Abdul Alim was unofficially declared winner in the by-polls to the post of chairman of Fulgazi upazila held on Sunday.
Alim, also Awami League’s Sadar upazila general secretary, bagged 47,266 votes while his nearest candidate local BNP leader Mahtab Uddin Chowdhury Minar, who was arrested in the capital this morning, polled 4,289.
Earlier, voting for the by-election to the post of chairman was held peacefully from 8am to 4pm.
The post fell vacant after chairman Ekramul Haque Ekram was shot and burnt to death by miscreants in Academy area of the district town on May 20 this year.
Additional forces of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), Rapid Action Battalion and Ansar & Village Defence Party alongside 500 policemen remained deployed to maintain law and order in the election area.
Meanwhile, police arrested BNP-backed candidate Mahtab Uddin Chowdhury Minar, also the prime accused in Ekram murder case, in the capital on Sunday morning.
A team of Adabar Police Station arrested Minar from BIRDEM Hospital in connection with the Ekram murder case.
