An Awami League activist was stabbed to death allegedly by his rivals over establishing supremacy at Pitamborbashi under Kumarkhali upazila in Kushtia on Saturday night.
The deceased is Shipon Ali, 35, of the area.
Quiting villagers, Kumarkhali police station officer-in-charge Mojibur Rahman said that there had been a long standing dispute between Shipon’s father Altaf Hossain, a former vice-president of Panti Union Awami League, and Panti Union AL incumbent general secretary Samiur Rahman Sumon over establishing supremacy in the area.
Following the dispute, a group of people led by Sumon caught Shipon from Goder Bazar area and stabbed him with sharp weapons around 11:30pm, leaving him seriously injured.
Local people, later, rescued Shipon in an unconscious condition and he died on the way to Kushtia Sadar Hospital, the police official said.
Sporadic clashes had taken place between the two groups after the incident, the police official said, adding that additional police personnel were deployed in the area to avert any further unwanted incident.
Sumon, however, could not be reached despite repeated attempts.
