Association of Grassroots Women Entrepreneurs Bangladesh (AGWEB) Tuesday honored women entrepreneurs through organizing an award giving ceremony entitled ‘Grassroots Women Entrepreneurs ward – 2013’ in cooperation with IFIC Bank Limited at Diploma Engineer’s Institute at city’s Kakrail area.
AGWEB organized the event to give recognition to those women entrepreneurs who have achieved significant success in the field of small businesses in the country.
Speaker of the Parliament Dr Shirin Sharmin Shaudhury was the chief guest of the programme while State Minister for Women and Children affairs Meher Afroze Chumki, Governnor of Bangladesh Bank Dr Atiur Rahman, Managing Director and CEO of IFIC Bank Shah A Sarwar were present as special guests with AGWEB President Moushumi Islam in the chair.
Mentioning that half of the country’s population is women, the Speaker said, “Socioeconomic uplift of the country is not possible keeping the women isolated from the economical activities.”
“The government is arranging different types of free trainings for the women at grassroots to sharpen their skills,” she added.
State Minister for Women and Children affairs Meher Afroze Chumki said, “Economic empowerment of women is essential to transform Bangladesh into a middle income country.”
Governnor of Bangladesh Bank Dr Atiur Rahman said, “To attain sustainable economic growth it is essential to ensure women participation in mainstream development and it is our duty to create opportunities for them.”
AGWEB President Moushumi Islam placed several demands from the government and Bangladesh Bank including reduce bank loan interest on 5 per cent from 10 per cent”.
