Many of the rural women are becoming active towards attaining their social dignity after engaging themselves in various income generation activities by their own initiatives instead of relying on the government and non-government jobs.
Lovely Akhtar, 30, a resident of Chinishpur village under Sadar upazila of the district is one of the successful self-reliant women. She explained the torments she endured when her husband left her 12 years ago for dowry only after six months of her marriage.
At the age of 18 years Lovely, daughter of a poor farmer, established herself by working very hard in agriculture as a marginal farmer.
She brought revolutionary changes to her life getting loan from some middlemen and she had mortgaged two bighas of her farm land with a neighbor.
Lovely achieved success in producing paddy from the land then gradually increased mortgage land and with the help of the local Agriculture Extension Department (DAE).
During the last Boro season she produced over 400 mounds of paddy cultivating 16 bighas of land. Lovely also received one week training on Hybrid Rice by the invitation of China National Hybrid Rice Research and Development Centre. This year she received award from Narsingdi Zilla Parishad for her good performance on Agriculture.
