Local people becoming agitated uprooted bituminous carpeting, stopped work and assaulted some workers of the contractor at Gosherhut point under Gournadi Upazila of `Patharia-Gosherhhut Regional Road’ on Saturday noon.
They alleged that due to sub standard work of the contractor bitumen carpeting of the road was wiped out within few hours or washed away with in few months of the work.
The work of repairing 12.7 kilometer long and 18 feet wide road from Agoiljhara upazila Sadar via Basailhut to Ghosherhut of Gournadi upazila would be repaired at the cost of Tk 30 crore, roads and highways district office sources said.
Sudhir Ranjan, Kawsar Ahmed, members of Khanjapur union Parishad under Gournadi upazila and local people alleged that repairing work about two kilometers road from the front of the house of Sudhir Member to Firozar More crossing under Bakai village of Khanjapur was done with sub standard materials and process.
As per tender schedule, the work should be done by mixing LA Grade-35 stone chips with Sylhet Chan sand making macadam and then again covering the work with Sylhet Chan sand and after clearing that sand making 40 ml carpeting with 10 ml sealed quote, he added.
However Shamsul Huq, work assistant of R and H department, was present during the work and he ignored the request of the local people to do the work maintaining prime carpeting standard and sealed quoting.
The workers of the contractor managing R and H departmental staffs do the sub standard work with local sands and even using brick bats instead of stone chips without doing any sealed quote. They did not make guide wall with bricks and used only bamboo and drum-sheets for piling of the road, local people alleged.
After informed Abdur Rois Serniabad,Agoiljhara upazila Chairman visited the spot and said that the situation is created as the workers failed to work mantling proper slandard. However only about 5 hundred meters area of the work affected and the contractor must repair that.
Golam Mostafa, executive engineer of Roads and Highways Department (RHD),Barishal , said It’s not a major problem as date line of completion of the work would be ended on December,2019 and we yet not took over the charge of the road from the contractor . According to the tender schedule the contractor is bound to repair if any damage occurred within a year of handing over the work. ##
`The Patharia-Gosherhut Regional 12.7 km road repairing and reconstruction work started at four month ago would be done at the cost of 30 core taka ‘ he added.
Mahafuz Khan, owner of the M M Enterprise, said only 200-300 meter roads out of 12.7 km were damaged due to monsoon raining and that would be repaired soon. Already 10 km road construction work has been completed and no problem was created there.
