Afghan team praises women empowerment in Bangladesh

The visiting Afghanistan parliamentary delegation yesterday termed Bangladesh a role model for empowerment of women.
The six-member delegation led by Afghan parliament women affairs committee chairperson Fawzia Koofi expressed the view during a meeting with Bangladesh Jatiya Sangsad Speaker and Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) Chairperson Dr. Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury at her parliament office here, said an official release.
Other members of the delegation are Toorpeakay Patman, Kobra Mustafawi, Zahra Tokhi Zabuli, Rubaba Parwani Darwish and Azizi Jalis. They discussed with the speaker women empowerment and education, gender parity, women’s socio-economic development, prevention of violence against women and participation of women in parliamentary activities.
Speaker Shirin Sharmin said the government of Sheikh Hasina has given special emphasis on socio-economic development of women. The long-term results of different programmes taken for development of women and children are already being visible, she added.
Dr. Shirin Sharmin said women in Bangladesh have progressed in education and they are making contributions to the work field too.
