Afghan support to strengthen addressing Rohingya issue: Speaker

Speaker of the Jatiya Sangsad and Chairperson of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) Executive Committee Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury said the role of Afghanistan parliament would strengthen Bangladesh’s position to address the Rohingya crisis.
Dr Chaudhury came up with the expectation on Friday as Afghanistan parliament delegation chief Deputy Speaker Nazir Ahmad Ahmadzai made a courtesy call on her on the second day of the 8th conference of the Association of SAARC Speakers and Parliamentarians in Colombo, Sri Lanka.
Referring to the firm steps taken by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to the cause of the persecuted Rohingya, the Speaker said, “Five lakh Rohingya who recently entered into Bangladesh territory being the worst victims of the brutalities in their ancestral home in Myanmar are dreaming of surviving due to her time-befitting and pragmatic leadership.”
Sheikh Hasian has been hailed by the international community for raising a five-point proposal to repatriate the Rohingya and establish peace in the troubled-torn Rakhine state, she added.
The Afghan parliamentary delegation also assured Dr Shirin of providing all-out support and assistance to resolve the Rohingya problems.
Later, Sri Lankan Speaker Deshabandu Karu Jayasuriya also paid a courtesy call on Bangladesh Speaker.
Bangladesh delegation members: Whip Mohammad Shahiduzzaman Sarker, Begum Sagupta Yasmin Emily, Talukder M Younus, Syeda Sayera Mohsin and Senior Secretary of the Jatiya Sangsad Dr M Abdur Rab Hawlader, among others, were present.
