Commentary: Advisory body must tell truth and show courage when people are dying

A 17-member ‘national technical advisory committee’ led by neonatologist Mohammod Shahidullah has been formed by the government to find ways to improve the coronavirus health services. Director of Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control and Research (IEDCR) Meerjady Sabrina Flora was made member secretary of the body.
The panel will provide suggestions to the government on the prevention of novel coronavirus and increase the quality of health service in the hospitals. It would also advise the government about the motivation and capacity building of doctors to fight the deadly pandemic.
We insist that because of the nature of crisis being deadly and lives of the people have to be saved, the advisory panel must ensure that its advice is implemented by the government. The body should not be used as a helpless body. The members should be ready to resign if the panel’s advice cannot be effective.
The first coronavirus infected person was identified in the country on March 8. And it needed about 42 days for the government to feel the necessity of forming a technical expert committee. What’s seen is that the government itself is mismanaged and the health system is completely broken. Doctors and nurses are worried about their own safety. But the government has no worry, if the doctors die in a helpless way.
The lockdown does not work one-sidedly. The government must do its own part. But it has no plans to supply food packages to every household so locked down. They are not obligated to learn from the examples in other countries. The governments of rich countries are working tirelessly day and night to find the best way to be helpful about the problems faced by their people as a result of lockdown and shutdown policies.
Our government thinks police power is everything. So the advisory body should first ensure that the lockdown system
becomes tolerable for the people. Simultaneously the body has to take emergency steps to make the health care system properly equipped. The equipments necessary are not many and not very costly either. Some politicised health officials are still lying and not exposing the failures of the government.
Though belated, we can at least hope that the technical committee would be able to activate the collapsed healthcare system. It needs to make the lockdown meaningful. Similarly, the health care system will also have to be efficient to take care of the suspected coronavirus patients.
We do not want to hear shortage of fund from the government. We saw how lavish the government was in respect of their pet projects. How easy it was to take expensive foreign trips too often. Even for ordinary sickness going abroad was a regular routine. The government’s claim was that their magic politics of development has made us rich comparable to Singapore.
For the callousness to secure protective gear more than 100 doctors have been infected with coronavirus so far in the country. Leaders of Bangladesh Doctors Foundation, an organisation of doctors, said if this number continues to rise in this way, there will be no doctors left to treat patients. Bangladesh Basic Graduate Nurses’ Society claimed at least 57 nurses were infected while 270 others are in m across the country.
Doctors categorically blamed the low standard of mask N-95 and Personal Protective Equipment as a factor behind increased number of infection among the frontline fighters. Due to lack of protective gears, a doctor of Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital died at Kurmitola General Hospital on Wednesday.
All in all, the sycophants in the government took full advantage of the government for not being elected and exploited it in every way to indulge in corruption. Only lockdown and shutdown is not the only method for fighting the war against corona.
The consequent loss of jobs and income is for the government to take care of. The banks have no money. Looting of thousand of crores taka from the banks was no problem for the government. The looters must now refund the public money.
We wish the advisory body all success.
