ADR system will make life of hill people easier

Speakers at a workshop said that Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) system aimed at ensuring legal aid services for the people of Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT) will make their life easy. Terming CHT people, especially the ethnic communities, backward, they also urged the people to resolve all sorts of disputes through their tradition and customary laws.
They said it at a workshop held at the conference hall of District Session and Judge Court on Thursday morning with District and Session Judge Enamul Haque Bhuiyan in the chair, while Director of National Legal Aid Malik Abdullah Al Amin attended the programme as chief guest. National Legal Aid and UNDP-CHTDF jointly organised the programme. Director of National Legal Aid Malik Abdullah Al Amin said that hill people especially the ethnic community ones generally do not go to police for justice. Even many of them are unwilling to go to existing court since long time is needed to resolve any dispute, he added.
He also pointed out that hill people want immediate judgment as per their customary laws and that is only possible through the ADR system. He also urged all to create mass awareness about it. Among others, Joint District Judge Abdulla Al Mamun, Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Rokeya Begum, Additional District Magistrate Md Abul Amin, Deputy Director of National Legal Aid Md Rakibul Islam, Member Secretary of Khagrachhari Bar Advocate Abul Hossain, Public Prosecutor Advocate Bidan Kanoongo, Government Pleader Advocate Gias Uddin, National Project Coordinator Bashir Ahmed Moni, and District Project Coordinator Ashish Ranjan Dey also spoke in the meeting.
Earlier, on Wednesday evening Director of National Legal Aid Malik Abdullah Al Amin inaugurated the programme as chief guest.
People from different sections of the society participated in the inaugural ceremony.
