Successful adoption of modern technologies is very vital to boost sugarcane production in the region, including its vast Barind tract to meet its gradually mounting demand.
Apart from, modern varieties and technologies developed by Bangladesh Sugar Crop Research Institute (BSRI) can be an effective means of boosting sugarcane farming and its production.
BSRI scientists and researchers made this observation while addressing a daylong farmers training titled “Modern Technologies for Sugar Crop Farming” at conference hall of North Bengal Sugar Mills (NBSM) Limited on Monday.
BSRI under its ‘Strengthening Integrated Research Programme’ hosted the training attended by around 50 farmers. BSRI Director General Dr Amzad Hossain and NBSM Managing Director Abdul Kader addressed the inaugural session as chief and special guests respectively with BSRI Director (Research) Dr Samajit Kumar Paul in the chair.
Chief Scientific Officer Dr Sayeeda Khatun, General Manager (Agriculture) Mazharul Islam, Deputy General Manager Monzurul Haque, Senior Scientific Officer Rezaul Karim and Scientific Officer Rashedul Islam conducted the training sessions disseminating their expertise on the issue.
Abdul Kader urged the farmers to boost sugarcane farming and supply those to the sugar mills spontaneously in the greater interests of the existence of the mills. “Boosting acreage of sugarcane farming and supplying those to the mills can be a vital means of survival of the mills,” he identically mentioned.
In his remarks, Dr Amzad Hossain said the region has enormous prospects of boosting sugarcane yield to expected level and the farmers have a vital role to boost production of the cash crop.
He recommended crop-rationing system so that the conventional crop diversification could be sustained. Dr Hossain attributed that the sugar has a vital role in the mental development of the young generation along with economic development of the nation.
In this regard, he said per 100 ml sugarcane juice contain 90.2g water, 0.1g protein, 0.2g fat, 9.1g carbohydrate, 0.4g mineral, 10mg calcium, 10mg phosphorus, 1.1mg iron, 6microgram carotene, 0.04mg riboflavin and 39 kilocalorie food energy.
There is enormous prospect of getting the protein through substantial enhancement of the cash crop production that can help reduce family level protein deficiency.
He added that regular in-take of sugar or molasses side by side with rice and other nutritious foods is very essential for human beings, especially the children for developing their intelligence power.
