Experts at the launching ceremony of a 25- day farmers’ training programme have laid emphasis on adoption of newer technologies in farming improved crop varieties to increase production and make agriculture more profitable.
They put special importance on adoption of modern crop disease and pests’ management methods in cultivation of the BARI-evolved improved varieties of crops to increase production of oil seeds, pesticide-free fruits and vegetables.
The Regional Agriculture Research Station (RARS) of Bangladesh Agriculture Research Institute (BARI) launched the 25-day training programme at its Burirhat Farm here on Wednesday afternoon, said a press release.
One-thousand male and female farmers of the district, including riverine char areas, are participating in the training programme that will conclude on April 30 next.
Of them, 40 farmers will take part in the daily batch of the 25-day training programme.
The participating farmers will get knowledge on adopting of newer technologies, disease and pests’ management methods in cultivation of improved crop varieties like potato, mustard, maize, groundout, pesticide- free mango, litchi, guava, banana, brinjal, BT brinjal and gourds from the training programme.
The farmers will also be encouraged to adopt the quadruple cropping pattern for producing four crops on the same land annually to increase crop intensity and increase production of hygienic foods.
Chief Scientific Officer of the RARS of BARI at Burirhat Md Rais Uddin Chowdhury inaugurated the training programme as the chief guest with its Principal Scientific Officer (PSO) Dr Md Badiuzzaman in the chair.
PSO of BARI at the RARS Dr Ashish Kumar Saha, its Senior Scientific Officer Dr Md Obaidul Haque, Dr Sarker Mohammad Abu Hena Mostafa Kamal, Dr Md Harun-Ar-Rashid and Bikash Sarker were present.
Dr Ashish Kumar Saha discussed about the benefits of cultivation of the BARI-evolved improved and high yielding crop varieties adopting newer technologies and quadruple cropping pattern to increase hygienic food production.
“The farmers will get adequate knowledge from the training programme on making farm activities more profitable by producing various crops, hygienic fruits and vegetables to increase incomes for attaining self-reliance,” he said.
The chief guest urged the farmers for expanding cultivation the BARI- evolved improved crop varieties to increase production of hygienic crops adopting newer technologies and quadruple cropping pattern to enhance crop intensity.
