The guardians and the students who achieved GPA-5 in the Secondary School Certificate (SSC) examination 2018 are worried about their admission into the country’s renowned colleges due to lack of seat capacity.
The number of seats in both the reputed government and private colleges is less than that of GPA-5 scorers.
The admission process will begin from May 13 and continue till May 24 across the country.
A total of 110,629 students got GPA-5 in SSC and its equivalent examinations this year.
But the number of seats in the top 200 reputed colleges is about 50,000 all over the country.
Alimul Haider, a guardian, told The New Nation yesterday that his son attained GPA-5 in the SSC examination this year. He wants to admit his son in a reputed college in the capital. But he is in doubt about admission due to severe seat crisis here.
“I have been trying to prepare my son as qualified candidate for higher education. But my all efforts will go in vain if I failed to admit my son in a reputed college in the city,” he said.
According to Education Ministry sources, there are 8,864 government and non-government higher secondary educational institutions in the country. But, about 200 of the institutions are reputed. These institutions have an enrollment capacity of only 50,000 to 60,000 students.
As a result, many meritorious students will fail to get admitted into reputed colleges due to the seat crisis.
Statistics available from BANBEIS (Bangladesh Bureau of Education Information and Statistics) showed that there were only several thousand seats for XI students in reputed colleges last year and this year the number of seats is almost the same.
In Dhaka, the enrollment for Class-XI was 2,449 at Adamjee Cantonment College, 516 at BAF Shaheen College in Kurmitola, 1,079 at Bir Uttam Anwar Girls School and College, 694 at Shamsul Hoque Khan School and College, 2,958 at Dhaka City College, 1,014 at Shaheed Police Smriti College, 1,474 at Noor Mohammad Public College, 2,537 at Dhaka Commerce College, 896 at Dhaka Residential Model College, 3,118 at Notre Dame College, 1,705 at Munshi Abdur Rouf Border Guard Bangladesh College, 1,893 at Viqarunnisa Noon School and College, 1,332 at Holy Cross College and 1,619 at Rajuk Uttara Model College last year.
In Rajshahi, the enrollment at New Govt Degree College was 1,200 last year, while the enrollment was 1,148 at Rajshahi Govt Women’s College and 605 at Rajshahi College.
In Chittogram, enrollment seats at Govt Chittogram College were 850 last year, while enrollment was 1,895 at Govt City College, 785 at Govt College of Commerce and 1,620 at Govt Haji Mohammad Mohsin College.
In Barishal, Amrita Lal Dey College enrolled 1,149 students last year while the enrollment at Government Women’s College was 1,230 and 926 at Syed Hatem Ali College.
In Sylhet, annual enrollment to Class-XI was 320 at Govt MC College, 1,234 at Madan Mohan College and 706 at Sylhet Govt Women’s College.
Meanwhile, high officials of the Ministry and boards said, there are enough seats in intermediate colleges across the country for students who passed SSC and equivalent examinations this year.
They, however, said many students may not get enrolled for their preferred institutions as the number of reputed colleges is few and seats for XI students are limited.
Inter-Education Board Coordination Subcommittee President Professor Ziaul Haque told The New Nation yesterday, “The students will not face any problem over admission as the enrollment capacity at the colleges is over 19 lakh seats whereas the successful students are below the number of seats.”
But all the GPA-5 holders will not get chance of admission into their preferred colleges as seats in reputed institutions are less than the number of GPA-5 scorers, he said.
A Ministry official said, a large number of seats remained vacant in colleges in rural areas.
But, students who will try to get admitted into reputed institutions may face hurdles due to limited number of seats there.
A meeting was held on April 30 at the Education Ministry regarding the admission at colleges to class-XI for 2018-19 session where a admission policy for Class- XI was finalized, Ministry sources said
As per the policy, the students will be able to submit a list of their 5-10 preferred institutions through online and later the Education Board will select one institution for every student where they will get enrolled.
Dr Mollah Jalal Uddin, Additional Secretary of the Education Ministry (College), said, “This year the 100 percent students will be admitted on the basis of merit at every college and there will be no reserve seat for quota this year.”
