Joynal Abedin Khan :
A total of 776 first year students in BSc, Diploma and Midwifery nursing courses in different nursing institutes of the country have lost their studentship permanently due to the cancellation of the admission for alleged forgery in admission process.
The forgery had occurred in the admission process of the three courses of the current academic session due to the alleged negligence of the Department of Nursing Services (DNS) and the state-owned mobile operator company — Teletalk.
Almost all of them also missed the chance to get admitted in any higher educational institutions for the present academic session as their two-year time limitation for admission opportunity have already expired after passing the Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC), relevant sources said.
However, the students have denied the allegation of forgery, saying from form fill up to admission process has been completed according to the circular rules. They demanded to withdraw the decision of admission cancellation by the DNS immediately.
A victim student Monika Khatun of Chuadanga Nursing Institute claimed that she has already lost her dream to become a nurse after cancellation of the admission.
She demanded that DNS has issued the cancellation notice without any probe-body report which is simply an inhuman behavior towards the victim students.
Another victim of the institute Ms Nasima asked the authorities concerned that why they did not take proper steps in the primary level of the admission process?
DNS Director Suriaya Begum told The New Nation on Thursday that the students were admitted fraudulently in BSc, Diploma and Midwifery nursing courses
of different nursing institutes presenting false information with the help of some ‘unscrupulous’ staff of Teletak Company.
“Information of these students, provided through online during the application, does not match with the students’ genuine information. Even, the students and their guardians might have link with the forgery, she alleged.
Letters from the DNS were sent to the heads of the concerned institutes to take legal action against those fraud students by canceling the studentship,” the DNS Director said.
In a query raised about that, how such a large number of fake students admitted fraudulently by providing the false information despite the application process were completed through online, she said, “A powerful gang was involved in this illegal admission forgery.”
The Teletalk Company is liable for this horrified fraudulence incident in the long history of nursing education in the country, she said.
Chief Coordinator of Bangladesh Nurses Council Unity, Dr. Md. Mafij Ullah, said that such fraudulence incident is unprecedented in the history of nursing education. It’s urgent to identify those involved and brought them to book by formation of a committee. “Otherwise, the nursing education system would be collapsed.”
Lutfun Nahar, Assistant Director (Education) and in-charge of monitoring and controlling the admission process of the DNS said that nursing services were done nothing manually. Teletalk has controlled the whole process. So, there is no opportunity to blame the DNS in this incident.
Joint Secretary in the Ministry of Health (Hospital) Mosharraf Hossain said that it has been decided to form a committee to investigate the incident by the directive of the Health Minister. The committee will take legal action after investigation against those involved in the fraudulence.
Studentship of 38 out of 49 first year nursing students of Chuadanga Nursing Institute (CNI) has been cancelled due to the admission forgery, he said.
“A powerful group is involved in this illegal admission forgery. They took huge amount of money from the students with lower GPA by giving the chance of admission,” he alleged.
Managing Director of Teletalk Gias Uddin Ahmed said that Teletalk has done nothing manually. It (Teletalk) just confirmed about the students application by receiving the applications and send Track numbers. The Department of Nursing Services controlled all the subsequent steps. And they have not informed any problems of the admission process.
In-charge of Chuadanga Nursing Institute Alomoti Begum said that a number of 38 students were enrolled with roll numbers while another 38 students were admitted to a different institute with the same roll numbers.
Directorate of Chuadanga Health Service ordered to cancel the studentship of those 38 students on the charge of fraudulence activities in admission process.
According to relevant sources, the whole admission process was monitored and controlled from the Department of Nursing Services. So, the officials of Nursing Service Department have the liability of this fraudulent admission.
A gang of unscrupulous staff of both the DNS and Teletalk have taken Tk. 2lakh to 3 lakh from each student with lower GPA by giving the chance of admission, they alleged.
