‘New sensation’ Mustafizur Rahman shone with the cherry in his debut in County Cricket Championship as his team Sussex beat Essex by 24 runs in their NatWest Twenty20 Blast match at Chemsford in London on Thursday.
Mustafizur Rahman captured four wickets for 23 runs and was adjudged the Man of the Match for his
outstanding bowling performance. Sent into bat first, Sussex piled up a mammoth 200 for the loss of six wickets in the stipulated 20 overs and then restricted Essex to 176 for the loss of eight wickets.
Sussex made a good start as CD Nash and LJ Wright, the two openers put on together 43 runs in the opening stand before CD Nash was caught by NL Browne off MR Quinn. Then PD Salt and LR Taylor contributed together 41 runs for the third wicket partnership before PD Salt was caught by Ashar Zaidi off RS Bopara when Sussex’s score was 106 for the loss of three wickets. Later, CJ Jordan and C Cachopa added together 52 runs in the sixth wicket stand before Cachopa was trapped leg before wicket by GR Napier when Sussex’s total was 174 for the loss of six wickets.
CJ Jordan remained unbeaten with 45. His 21-ball innings was decorated with five sixes and one four. PD Salt hit a marvellous 33 from 19 balls including two sixes and three fours while LJ Wright notched up a fine 32 off 24 balls amid three fours and a sixer. Besides, CD Nash and LR Taylor added 25 and 24 runs respectively to the Sussex total. Later, RS Bopara, one of the most successful batsmen of Essex was caught by LJ Wright off Mustafizur Rahman. Bopara made 32 from 26 balls with two fours and a six. Opener DW Lawrence top-scored with 36. he hit two fours and two sixes before he was trapped leg before wicket by WA Beer when Essex’s score was 79 for the loss of three wickets.
Four-down batsman RN Doeschate was caught by TS Mills off Mustafizur Rahman. Doeschate scored 26 off 23 balls with two sixes and one four. Mustafizur Rahman bowled out JS Foster for just five runs and CJ Taylor for a duck.
