Speakers at a discussion here unequivocally called for adequate safe treatment facilities towards the drug addicts for their rehabilitation as drug and alcohol addiction is a very serious disease.
They mentioned addiction can tear families and destroy lives. The people who suffer from addiction need a great deal of professional help to overcome this disease.
They were addressing the inaugural session of a three-day training on ‘drug addicts treatment and management’ at conference hall of Association for Community Development (ACD) in the metropolis today.
ACD and GIZ jointly organized the training with the main thrust of creating safe treatment scope for the drug addicts.
Additional Director of Department of Drugs and Narcotics Control Mujibur Rahman Patwari addressed the session as the chief guest with ACD Executive Director Salima Sarwar in the chair.
Senior Superintendent of Rajshahi Central Jail Shafiqul Islam Khan, Jailor Shahadat Hossain, Deputy Civil Surgeon Dr Farhana Haque and GIZ Representative Kazi Rabeya also spoke.
More than 35 people comprising deputy jailors, doctors, pharmacists and other stakeholders from Chapianwabgonj, Natore, Pabna and host Rajshahi are taking part in the training.
Salima Sarwar told the meeting that people, especially the young generation and students of different educational institutions including a number of females, have become addicted to different kinds of drug including heroin, phensidyl, yaba, marijuana, etc.
These contraband items are openly sold at different spots and shops of the city and a large number of drug addicts gathering at those places regularly to buy the items and involve them in drug abuse, she added.
On the other hand, to treat the drugs addicts, there is only one government and five private drug rehabilitation centres in the city.
