The Power Division has planned to supply adequate amount of electricity to rural areas during the Boro season for irrigation purpose, without affecting supply in the urban areas.
The demand for electricity during the peak summer and the Boro season is estimated for 8500MW, according to the Power Division sources. About 1,800 MW is required exclusively for irrigation.
“Against the average demand for 8,500MW during the summer and Boro irrigation period, we will be able to generate about 8,000MW of electricity,” said Monwar Islam, Power Division Secretary. The Power Development Board requires 1,250 million cubic feet of gas per day for grid-feeding power plants during the Boro season to increase power generation from gas-fired plants.
A director of Petrobangla said, over 900mmcfd gas has been supplied to the power plants during the Boro season. He said another 100mmcfd would be added by April.
“Five electricity distribution companies so far provided a total of 22,064 new electricity connections to power pumps for irrigation purpose this year, raising the number of power pumps to 357,057,” the power division secretary said.
“We have made special arrangements to supply uninterrupted power in the rural areas everyday from 10pm to 8 am until May,” he said adding that power utilities would divert electricity from urban areas to the Boro fields during the off-peak hours from 10pm to 8am during the cultivation season.
