The National Disaster Preparedness Day was observed on Tuesday through various programmes to aware people to fight any kinds of disasters.
Experts at a post-rally discussion have underscored the need for adaptation to climate change and taking community-based early preparedness to reduce risks of natural calamities and disasters.
Marking the day, District Administration organised the post-rally discussion at the conference room of Circuit House here.
Divisional Commission Dr. Muhammad Anwar Hossain Howlader attended the meeting as the chief guest with Deputy Commissioner Md. Helal Hossain in the chair.
Additional Deputy Commissioner (General) Ziaur Rahman, Deputy Police Commissioner Ehsan Shah, District Relief and Rehabilitation Officer Azizul
Haque Joardar and freedom fighter Alamgir Kabir were present, among others, on the occasion.
The chief guest stressed taking adequate early preparedness, adapting to climate change and disseminating knowledge among the common people at community levels to reduce risks of natural disasters.
“The present government has taken various programmes to reduce disaster
risks through dissemination of information and warning, early preparedness, training and effective emergency response management systems,” he added.
Speakers expressed concern over frequent incidents of tornado, earth quake, tsunami, tidal surge, drought, floods and river and coastal erosions being caused by adverse impacts of climate change, affecting every sector of the civilisation.
Earlier, a rally, led by Deputy Commissioner, brought out from Shaheed Hadis Park and ended at the Circuit House premises after parading different city streets to mark the day.

Kishoreganj District Administration arranged a discussion, rally and fire service civil defense also a demonstration of artificial earthquake drill on G.D Govt. College ground marking the day.
A discussion was held at Collectorate Conference Room on Tuesday noon. Additional Deputy Commissioner (General) Abdullah-al-Masud attended as chief guest while D.R.R.O Md. Mokaram Hossain in the chair.
It was addressed among others by Magistrate Galib Mahmud Pasha, Assistant Commissioner & Magistrate Shafiqul Islam, Magistrate Mahamudul Hasan, CAB District Secretary Monour Hossen Rony, POPI NGO Manager Md. BSS from Rajshahi reports: Speakers at a post-rally discussion here on Tuesday said loss of lives and assets caused by natural disasters could be mitigated to a great extent through collective efforts of all and better management.
They said the elderly people should be given priority in the activities and process of disaster reduction as they are more vulnerable to any disasters. District administration organised the discussion at the playground of Rajshahi Polytechnic Institute (RPI) to mark the National Day for Disaster Preparedness in association with various development organisations.
Deputy Commissioner Hamidul Haque addressed the discussion as chief guest with District Relief and Rehabilitation Officer Aminul Haque in the chair. Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture Extension Shamsul Haque, Deputy Director of Fire Service and Civil Defense Abdur Rashid, Deputy Director in District Information Office Nafeyala Nasrin and RPI Principal Engineer Farid Uddin also spoke.
The speakers observed that proper and effective uses of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) can help reduce loss of lives and property caused by natural disasters.
There is no scope of preventing occurrence of natural catastrophe but there is scope of reducing damage and other casualties through the best uses of modern technologies and communications.
Chief Guest Hamidul Haque highlighted the significance of the day and emphasized on good collaboration and coordination to mitigate the sufferings of natural disasters putting forward a set of recommendations about ways to reduce the risks and losses caused by the disasters.
He stressed the need for a comprehensive approach for reducing the prevailing risks of natural disaster by creating mass awareness among people. Apart from this, he said a need-oriented and realistic plan should be formulated through wide-ranging survey and importance should be given to timely implementation of the time-befitting programmes to face the risks as early as possible.

The district administration organised the discussion at Zila School ground in observance of the National Disaster Preparedness Day with the theme of ‘Preventive measures to reduce disaster’s severity; Will expedite sustainable development’.
The Department of Disaster Management under the Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief and a number of non-government organisations extended assistance to celebrate the day with colourful programmes.
The programmes included rally, discussion, drawing competitions for school students on natural disasters, distribution of prizes and mock for earthquake and fire incidents preparedness.
Fire Service and Civil Defense personnel and volunteers of Bangladesh Red Crescent Society (BDRCS) and Scouts demonstrated mock fire fighting and earthquake management drills in presence of officials, students, teachers and commoners. Deputy Commissioner Md.Asib Ahsan led the rally that paraded the city streets with participation of hundreds of students, scouts, officials, employees, representatives of different NGOs and voluntary organisations.
