Addis Ababa confce on dev promoting dependence

At UN conference for development in Ethiopian capital of Addis Ababa Bangladesh State Minister for Finance MA Mannan chairs an important roundtable on ‘Ensuring Policy Coherence and an Enabling Environment at all Levels for Sustainable Development.
Noted economist Jeffry Sachs, ILO chief Guy Rider, ESCAP Executive Director Dr. Shamsad Akter, GCF’s Ms Hela Cheikhrouhow spoke among others on the occasion, said a press
 release of EquityBd in Dhaka. Mr. Jeffry Sachs stresses on three universalities for sustainable environmental protection including promotion of secondary education and primary healthcare. He also called upon people like Melinda and Gates to come forward to financing poverty eradication.
MA Mannan said leaders of developed countries must come forward to address global inequalities and agree with the findings of the developing countries in Addis Ababa conference on how to finance their development.
In the sideline developed countries, especially US and UK, took hard line distancing them from allowing CBDR (common but differentia responsibilities) and call for agreeing with intergovernmental tax body and Intellectual Property Right (IPR) in trade facilitation mechanism.
On the other hand, India and Brazil took hard position in favour of G77 plus China group in favour of developing countries. The conference presidency takes a mid position on Addis Acton Agenda seeking to bring some compromise in important issues like taxation.
Claudio Fernandez, a civil society leader from Brazil said he fears that the Addis Ababa conference is heading towards a conference of dependency on the rich rather financing for development.
Bangladeshi civil society activists Asgar Ali Sabri and Rezaul Karim Chowdhury from Bangladesh challenged the outlook of the powerful nations on Tuesday’s session and wondered how LDCs will benefit if they have no strong participation and how the BEPS will have policy coherence with WTO and IPI (International Policy Institutions).
