Md Joynal Abedin Khan :
An alleged drug addicted father killed his three-year old son in his city residence at Bangla Motor area, and was arrested before killing another son who was tactfully rescued in hostage by the law enforcers on Wednesday morning.
The deceased has been identified as Noor Safayet, son of Nuruzzaman Kajol, a mentally unstable drug addict.
The body was recovered from the first floor of the house on the 16 Link Road at Bangla Motor about 1:45pm, said Maruf Hasan Sarder, Deputy Commissioner of Ramna Division of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP).
The law enforcers also rescued Safayet’s five year old brother Surayet from the room as Kajol attempted to kill him with a long sword (ramdao), the police official said. The body of the child was sent to Dhaka Medical College morgue, where an autopsy will be done to determine the motive of death, the DC said. Police detained Kazal for allegedly killing the minor son, he said. Kajol in primary interrogation told police that Safayet was electrocuted, said HM Azimul Haque, Additional Deputy Commissioner (Ramna circle).
Acting on information that a man killed his one son and held another hostage in his house, Shahbagh Police encircled the house in the morning. Later, members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), Police, Ansar and fire service also rushed to the spot. But they could not nab Kazal as he was staying inside the house with a sword and the main gate was locked from inside, according to him.
Playing a trick, RAB-2 Sub Inspector (SI) Shahidul Islam managed to enter inside the house at about 11:30am and found a child body wrapped with burial cloth on a table.
As Islam asked Kazal if he needs any help, Kazal refused and said he will bury his son at about 1:00pm at Azimpur graveyard. At one stage, convinced by police, Kazal came out with his elder son while his aide with the dead one.
Claiming that the man is a drug addict, his brother Nurul Huda Ujwal said, “Nuruzzaman lives in the house with Safayet and Surayet. Failing to ensure his torture, Kazal’s two wives left him. He murdered Safayet and took another son hostage.”
He said, that Kajol went to a madrasa by their home around 7:30am and told them that his son Nuru Safayet died of electrocution.
Kajol along with his four other brothers used to live at their Banglamotor house, situated on 5.5 kathas of land. But all the brothers left the house due to his deteriorating mental health, his sister Rokeya Begum Keya.
Kajol was always suspicious of his brothers and believed they would grab the house from him, she said.
He was arrested three months ago as one of Kajol’s brothers filed a case against him on charge of torture.
Shahbagh Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Abul Hossain said that police were attempting to break into Kajol’s house-as they suspected that he was holding his two sons hostage inside.
They also said Kajol’s wife had left him, because of his mental condition and addiction, the OC said.
According to police and local sources, Kajol left his house around 8:15am, Wednesday morning, and brought another man to offer special prayers at his house.
The cleric saw that one of the children was unconscious and subsequently informed Shahbagh police.
After Abul Hossain and his team went to the house, they found that it was locked from the inside and that Kajol was sitting near the gate – with one of the children and a sword in his hand – refusing to open the door. For several hours, police attempted to break into the house and resolve the crisis-before finally breaking in.
One of Kajol’s relative, Nahida Akter, said that he is a drug addict and has been mentally unstable since last Eid-ul-Azha. The house belongs to Kajol’s family.
Kajol was carrying a sharp weapon when he was inside the house, police said.
Witnesses said that Kajol went out of the two-storey house around 8:00am this morning and brought in a cleric (Moulvi) for offering prayers at the house.
