Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) of Khulna Metropolitan Police (KMP) Khandaker Laboni and her former bodyguard Constable Mahmudul Hasan reportedly committed suicide in Magura district within a gap of few hours.
She had committed suicide in her village in Sreepur upazila of the district on Wednesday night while Mahmudul shot himself by his own shotgun in Police barrack on Thursday morning after returning from duty.
Laboni’s family members said she might have committed suicide due to strain relations with her husband while Mahmudul’s family said they were shocked as to why did he kill himself?
Meanwhile, the two incidents have created much speculation in the district about the suicides of the police personnel and what relations lie between them.
Police said that they were investigating the two incidents thoroughly as to why the two police personnel had committed suicide.
Laboni was found hanging from the ceiling fan of her grandfather’s house in Sarangdia village of the Sreepur upazila on Wednesday night, police sources said.
She was rushed to the hospital but on-duty doctors declared her dead. Sreepur Police Station said the body was sent to the morgue in Magura for autopsy.
Officer-in-Charge of Sreepur Police Station Priton Sarkar said, “We don’t have still any clear idea about the suicide of Laboni. We are investigating it.”
Laboni (40) was working as an ADC of the Intelligence Division of Khulna Metropolitan Police. She joined as the Assistant Superintendent of Police in the 30th BCS.
Family sources said, she came to her village on July 17 for one-week vacation.
About the cause of Laboni’s suicide, her father Shafiqul Azam told the media that Laboni had a strain relation with her husband for a long time. She might have committed suicide out of it, he added.
“Their unhappy relations created a distance between husband and wife. They were not happy and tried to avoid each other. Even she tried to commit suicide twice before,” he told the reporters.
Laboni’s husband Tarek Abdullah has been working as Assistant Director (AD) of Bangladesh Bank.
He, however, has been suffering from cancer from a long time and is currently undergoing treatment in India, family sources said.
Meanwhile, police recovered the body of Constable Mahmudul, 23, who was Laboni’s former orderly, from the rooftop of the Police Lines barrack around 6:30am on Thursday.
In the preliminary report, a bullet wound was found in his head, police said.
He was believed to have committed suicide soon after receiving the news of Laboni’s suicide, police said. His body was sent to Khulna Sadar Hospital for an autopsy.
“After returning from night shift duty, Mahmudul went to the rooftop of the police barrack on thrusday morning and shot himself in the head with the shotgun issued in his name,” Magura Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) Kamrul Hasan said.
Mahmudul was transferred to Magura Police Lines from KMP in May before he served as a bodyguard of Laboni.
However, police has been investigating the two incidents closely if there were any connection for the suicide because after Laboni’s suicide, Mahmudul shot himself within a span of few hours.
“We are still not clear if there is any connection between the two incidents. The preliminary report said that the two incidents are separate,” ASP Kamrul Hasan said.
Meanwhile, Sumaiya Khatun, sister of the deceased Mahmudul Hasan, said, “There was a good relation between police officer Laboni and my brother. They were like brother and sister. My brother was a good person and never misbehaved with anybody. There was no other relation between them.”
Mahmudul’s father Ejajul Haque is a police constable in Chuadanga. Mahmudul joined police service three years ago.
