ADB proposes funding $ 500m to strengthen ICT at public universities

Asian Development Bank (ADB) has proposed to initiate a project in Bangladesh beginning 2019-2020 Financial Year involving 500 million US dollars for strengthening public universities in areas of ICT and science technology. The tenure of the proposed project is expected to be from five to seven years.
The project will be implemented in three to five public universities in areas of information technology, high-tech agriculture, marine science, textiles, bio-medical science and other related areas. ADB and UGC will jointly select the universities.
The interest was shown when a-three member delegation led by Sungsup Ra, Director, Human and Social Development Division, South Asia Department, ADB called on Prof Abdul Mannan, Chairman, UGC at the latter’s office recently.
UGC Chairman termed the proposal by the delegation as very positive and said that the proposed project will help achieve the Millennium Development Goals of Bangladesh and immensely contribute to the capacity building of the universities. The University Grants Commission of Bangladesh will extend all necessary co-operations in implementation of the project, he added.
Prof Dr Mohammad Yousuf Ali Mollah, Member, UGC, Prof Dr Dil Afroza Begum, Member, UGC, Prof Dr Md. Akhtar Hossain, Member, UGC and Prof Dr M Shah Nowaz Ali, Member, UGC were present. Besides, Dr Md. Khaled, Secratery, UGC and other high officials were present in the meeting.
