The Bangladesh Resident Mission (BRM) of the Asian Development Bank (ADB) on Tuesday celebrated the bank’s 50th anniversary of working for the development of Asia and the Pacific, while celebrating the event at the Le Meridien Dhaka hotel, the bank also affirmed its long-term commitment and development partnership with Bangladesh, said a press release.
Over 200 stakeholders including development partners, think tanks, academia, business leaders, media, and civil society attended the event. The officials highlighted ADB’s partnership in improving the lives of people and socioeconomic conditions in Bangladesh and the Asia-Pacific region. Photos showcasing ADB’s partnership with Bangladesh were exhibited. A history book of ADB, titled “Banking on the Future of Asia and the Pacific: 50 Years of the ADB”, and a publication “50 Years of ADB: Bangladesh-ADB Partnership” were also launched at the event held in the evening.
The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has been a development partner of Bangladesh since 1973, and established its first field office in 1982 in Dhaka. ADB has so far provided Bangladesh with around $21 billion in loans and grants and mobilized about $8 billion in co-financing.
In 2017, ADB approved 5 projects for Bangladesh, worth around $1.9 billion and technical assistance of $4.8 million. ADB also mobilized $420.4 million in co-financing during 2017. Cumulative disbursements to Bangladesh for lending and grants financed by ordinary capital resources, the Asian Development Fund, and other special funds amount to $12.7 billion. Currently, ADB’s assistance for Bangladesh includes 51 projects with over $7.8 billion in active portfolio.
