Sexual harassment: Adabar SI Ratan sent to jail

A Dhaka court on Sunday sent Sub-Inspector Ratan Kumar Halder of Adabar Police Station to jail after rejecting his bail pleas on the charge of sexually harassing a female student of the ASA University in the city.
Judge Saleh Uddin Ahmed of the Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-4 of Dhaka passed the order after hearing on the bail petition filed by Ratan’s lawyer. The court on February 16 issued arrest warrant against SI Ratan Kumar after it took the
charge sheet into cognizance on the same day.
According to case statement, on February 01, a first-year female student of ASA University filed the case against Ratan Kumar. Later, Metropolitan Magistrate Emdadul Haque recorded the depositions of five witnesses, including the victim’s husband and her mother to submit the probe report that found the allegation of sexually harassing the victim true. Later, the then Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Sheikh Hafizur Rahman sent the judicial report to the tribunal.
She told the court in her complaint that SI Ratan and two police constable stopped her rickshaw in front of Japan Garden City on January 31, when she was on her way to a bookstall on the Nurjahan Road near the Shiite Muslim Mosque in Mohammedpur and started accusing her as a Yaba peddler.
The victim also alleged that the policemen then took her to a nearby electronics shop, and searched her vanity bag and harassed her sexually. A judicial inquiry was ordered after the victim filed the case. Dhaka Metropolitan Police and Tejgaon Division of Police to investigate the allegation formed two probe committees. The court asked the police also to submit their compliance report on March 16, stating whether the accused was arrested or not.
