Bagerhat Correspondent :
Acute scarcity of pure drinking water has been prevailing in Morrelganj, the biggest Upazila in Bagerhat district as well as in the whole of Khulna division for years together. But no special allotment or grant was sanctioned so far to solve this acute problem of pure drinking water.
In the fiscal year of 2016-17 a sum of Tk.3.00 was allocated per head of the population of 16 Unions and a Pourashava of the Upazila for water supply and sanitation purposes. But in some cases more than one Union received no money in this respect.
Morrelganj Upazila consists of big 16 Unions, one Porashava and 50 hats and bazars and its area is 440 squire kilometers where 4 lakh people are residing at present. According to a statistic, the number of tube-wells installed in the Upazila by the Government is 44,738. But in practice the picture is quite different. Due to excessive salinity in their water no body drinks their water. Not only that but also arsenic is present in the water of some of the tube-wells. Besides this, 80 per cent tube-wells are out of order for want of spare parts and maintenance work. Due to the excessive salinity in the water lives and livelihoods of the 90 per cent people of the Upazila are affected. There is scarcity of pure drinking water in 70 per cent families of the Upazila and at least 50 percent people have been suffering from health hazards.
People are now to collect pure drinking water from the far placed ponds. It may be mentioned here that there is no water supply plant in Morrelganj Poura area. So, 50 thousand dwellers of the Poura area are to depend on pond-water.
Most of the people of the Porashava and the Upazila are to collect rain water for drinking purpose and the rest are to depend on the water of ponds and canals.
Under the auspices of Government and non-Government organizations a number of Pond Sand Palants were installed in the different places of the Upazila in order to meet the demand of pure drinking water. But for want of maintenance work most of the PSFs are now out of order.
It is complained by the people that the activities of the Upazila Public Health Engineering department are not at all visible in this respect and a strong resentment was created among them about the department.
